The first Emirati participation in a World Expo dates back to 1970, when Abu Dhabi had a pavilion at Expo 1970 Osaka. Since gaining its independence in 1971, the United Arab Emirates has participated in all World Expos and most Specialised Expos, with some award-winning pavilions. The UAE joined the BIE in 1997, and in 2013 was elected to host World Expo 2020 in Dubai.

The UAE’s pavilion at Expo 2017 Astana introduced the country’s lifestyle and values with regard to the energy sector. The pavilion’s content and exhibits were managed by the National Media Council (NMC), and reflected the dynamism and modernity of the UAE’s energy sector.
Visitors could immerse themselves in the Emirati desert environment and marine landscape and gain key insights into the country’s energy strategy based on achieving energy security through traditional and renewable sources.
Visitors were guided through the pavilion and its exhibits by a virtual host, leading to three different spaces with large screen video presentations. Each audiovisual display shed light on the UAE’s international initiatives to improve energy access and build renewable energy capacity, as well as domestic efforts to create a diverse balance of energy sources.
The pavilion put a particular emphasis on investments in human capacity as a catalyst for comprehensive sustainable development.
The pavilion was staffed by Takatof volunteers from the UAE, part of a nationwide effort to strengthen voluntary work and societal cooperation. These volunteers will notably use their experience at Expo 2017 to contribute towards preparations for World Expo 2020, which the UAE is organising in Dubai, and which has “Sustainability” as one of its three subthemes.
