Mayor of Łódź visits BIE

The mayor of Łódź, Hanna Zdanowska, visited the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) today, 24 November, to discuss Poland’s candidature to host Specialised Expo 2022 in Łódź.

Ms Zdanowska, who was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Wojciech Rosicki, met with the Secretary General of the BIE, Vicente G. Loscertales. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor highlighted the Expo’s key role in the city’s revitalisation plan and exchanged on a range of issues surrounding the Expo project.

The meeting comes the day after the 160th General Assembly of the BIE, during which representatives from the Government of Poland and the city of Łódź, led by Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński, presented the Expo project to delegates of the BIE’s 169 Member States.

Ms. Zdanowska underlined her longstanding support for the Expo project, which is based around the theme “City Re:Invented”. This theme reflects the history of Łódź, a city that adopted ambitious urban revitalisation projects following the decline of its industries and after its historic buildings fell into disrepair. The mayor stated that the Expo would be “an opportunity for other cities to share their experiences and for Łódź to present its new way and new philosophy for the city.”

Mr. Loscertales commented that the bid project has significant potential and that he looks forward to the project examination phase, during which “the BIE will be able to find out more about the proposed theme and study the technical aspects of the Expo project.”

Poland submitted its bid to host Specialised Expo 2022 on 15 June 2016 and is to date the only country to have presented its candidature. The candidate list will close on 15 December 2016, after which the project examination phase will begin.
