Swiss involvement in World Expos dates back to the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. As an active participant in successive Expos, Switzerland was a founding Member State of the BIE when it was created by the 1928 Paris Convention. The country has continued to participate in numerous Specialised and World Expos, and its pavilion at Expo 2012 in Yeosu received a Gold award for its Creative Display.

Ahead of the opening of Expo 2017 Astana, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) asks Manuel Salchli, the National Commissioner of the Pavilion of Switzerland, about the country’s participation.
M. Salchli: The Swiss Pavilion at Expo-2017 will attempt to recreate the famous Swiss natural landscape. The trick is, that visitors to the Pavilion must actively contribute in order to achieve this natural beauty, mirroring the real-life effort each and every one of us must make in terms of energy efficiency, sustainability and cooperation.
Upon entering the Pavilion, the visitor is initially confronted by a grey and bland space. Only when they enter three houses – which address the three above-mentioned topics – and interact with energy does the landscape come to life and turn green. Visitors learn that their daily involvement with energy, their awareness of climate change and global cooperation have palpable consequences on the environment they inhabit.
In addition to this interactive landscape, a knowledge-exchange hub will bring together scientists, students and entrepreneurs from Switzerland, Kazakhstan and beyond. In a series of events, workshops and temporary exhibits, international energy researchers will seek solutions to energy issues together. Science works beyond national borders and only through academic networks can we find global solutions.
Switzerland is an innovation leader and offers a platform to witness and discuss smart future energy.
M. Salchli: One exhibition at the Swiss Pavilion will be talking about our daily life and show how energy can be used efficiently in the private home by using up to date appliances and processes when preparing our meals, for example, and the local sourcing of produce.
M. Salchli: The effort of each and every one counts in order for us to leave behind a healthy earth for the future generation. No effort of any individual is too small to make a difference. We must all take care of the natural resources and use innovations in order to preserve these resources.
