BIE carries out first Technical Visit ahead of Expo 2027 Belgrade

The Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, has carried out the BIE’s first Technical Visit to Belgrade since the election, in June, of Serbia as host country of Specialised Expo 2027.

The two-day visit included a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Siniša Mali to review plans for the Expo, as well as technical meetings to coordinate the preparation of the Expo 2027 Belgrade Recognition Dossier.

On 9 November, the Secretary General visited the site where the Expo will be held, part of a planned Urban Masterplan Complex between the Sava River and New Belgrade.

Since the election of Serbia on 21 June during the 172nd General Assembly of the BIE, preparations have been coordinated at the highest level to prepare for the next Specialised Expo. These efforts include the initiation of proceedings related to Expo infrastructure as well as the development of the Recognition Dossier of Expo 2027 Belgrade, the next step in the organisation of the Expo.

Drawing from the candidature dossier, the Recognition Dossier will present a detailed plan for the implementation of the Expo, including legislative and financial measures, the Expo site Master Plan, and legacy plans. Once submitted to the BIE and reviewed by Member States, the General Assembly will be able to grant recognition to Expo 2027 Belgrade, allowing Serbia to invite international participants and begin preparations in earnest.

The BIE Secretary General indicated: “Serbia has shown its strong willingness to work closely with the BIE and its Member States in the organisation of a successful Specialised Expo. Preparations for Expo 2027 Belgrade are moving ahead smoothly, and I look forward to making progress on the Recognition Dossier so that we can advance to the next phase of the Expo journey.”

Organised under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All”, Expo 2027 Belgrade is set to welcome 120 countries and 10 international organisations between 15 May and 15 August 2027.

On 28 November, a delegation from Serbia will, for the first time since its election as host country, present a progress report on Expo 2027 Belgrade to BIE Member States, during the 173rd General Assembly of the Organisation.

Expos are global events that explore a chosen theme through engaging and immersive discoveries. Among the different categories of Expos, Specialised Expos are designed to respond to a precise challenge facing humanity and may take place in the interval between two World Expos. Specialised Expos are limited in terms of duration - lasting up to three months - and space - with the exhibition area not exceeding 25 hectares. The site is entirely built by the Organiser, Participants being provided with pavilion space.

The most recent Specialised Expo, Expo 2017 Astana, took place in the capital of Kazakhstan under the theme “Future Energy”, and received almost 4 million visits.
