Expo 2022/23: Poland welcomes BIE Enquiry Mission

As part of the bidding process for the organisation of Specialised Expo 2022/23, an Enquiry Mission from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has arrived in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The delegation will assess the bid submitted by Poland to organise a Specialised Expo in the city of Łódź between 15 June and 15 September 2022. It is the second of three such Enquiry Missions, the first having already taken place in the United States and the next one to take place later in April in Argentina.

Poland, candidate for Specialised Expo 2022/23

Members of the Enquiry Mission arrived in Warsaw earlier today and will travel to Łódź on 5 April. The visit will include meetings with the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, and the Prime Minister, Beata Szydło. In Łódź, the BIE delegation will meet the Mayor of Łódź, Hanna Zdanowska, along with regional and municipal officials. In both Warsaw and Łódź, the delegation will receive detailed presentations of the bid project and exchange with key players behind the Expo bid.

The BIE delegation includes the Secretary General of the BIE, Vicente G. Loscertales and Ambassador Jai-chul Choi, Delegate of the Republic of Korea to the BIE and Chairman of the Executive Committee, who chairs the Enquiry Mission.

The task of the Enquiry Mission is to assess and validate the feasibility and viability of the Expo project, a necessary step for the candidature to go further in the selection process. This evaluation will ascertain Poland’s proposals for Expo 2022/23 following the recent submission of its bid dossier.

The bid dossier outlines the candidate’s vision for the Expo and identifies the theme of the proposed Expo in Łódź as “City Re:Invented”. This theme reflects the city’s own transformation through revitalisation as well as the global need to manage the transformation of cities with a view to their residents and the preservation of historical and cultural heritage. The proposed Expo would take place on a site in the New Centre of Łódź between 15 June and 15 September 2022, with plans for the site to be fully reintegrated into the city in the post-Expo period. The bid committee forecasts that 7.3 million visitors would visit the Expo over the three-month period.

Using the bid dossier as a guide, the Enquiry Mission will notably assess the motivations behind the Expo bid, the attractiveness of the proposed Expo theme, the proposed site and its planned re-use after the Expo, levels of local and national support for the project, expected participation, and the financial feasibility plan.
