Feeding the Planet, Energy for life

Is it possible to ensure sufficient, good, healthy and sustainable food for everyone?

In 2015, we will have reached the target year for the UN's Millenium Development Goals whose #1 objective is halving the proportion of undernourished people in developing countries. Even though this target is within reach, about 805 million people are still undernourished and the question of food safety and security is still one of the International Community's biggest challenges: by 2050, the world population could hit 9 billion and food demand is estimated to increase by 70%.

How can we ensure everyone has access to healthy food? How can we use resources in a sustainable way? How can we reduce waste? How must our need for wholesome, healthy food influence our choices in energy production and use of natural resources?

With the theme "Feeding the Planet, energy for life", Expo Milan 2015 aims at offering countries, international organizations, NGOs, the civil society and the general public, a discussion platform where all these questions can be addressed, best practices can be shared and guidelines for the future can be set. Participants will be able to showcase their vision and solutions through pavilions and events, and the UN, through the Food and Agriculture Organization, has partnered up with the organizer to work on the content of thematic areas and engage visitors in its Zero Hunger Challenge.

Exhibitions, debates, conferences, but also events, shows, concerts and food tastings, will embark the visitors in a hands-on immersive experience on nutrition.

Ongoing projects:

Expo Milano 2015 has already launched the discussion on nutrition through a series of initiatives that aim at sharing ideas and finding solutions. Here is a short list of the projects developped by the Expo. To learn about all the projects, visit Expo 2015's website.

The Feeding Knowledge Program

'Feeding Knowledge' is a program that lays the foundations for Expo Milano 2015 legacy by launching a network for international cooperation on Expo-related themes such as food security, biodiversity and preservation of natural resources.

The program was launched with a call for Best Practices: Governments, local bodies, associations, inter-governmental organizations, civil society networks, non-governmental organizations can submit initiatives that have proven positive in the field of nutrition.

WE-Women for Expo

On October 4th 2013, Expo Milano launched "Women for Expo", a project to create an international network of women on the subject of nutrition. Set up in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori, WE will invite artists, writers, entrepreneurs and all women around the globe to join the network and share their own experience, ideas, questions and achievements. These exchanges will be compiled in a multimedia Platform in order to create a global and interactive website for women on nutrition. During the Expo, the central role of women will be recognized, promoted, discussed, and debated through various Women for Expo initiatives and at the end of the Expo, the women of WE will create a "Charter for women" that will establish 10 essential ideas to make food a universal right.
