Experiencing Horticulture Today and What It Means For All of Us

overview1In a world where a healthy environment and safe and sufficient food are at the very forefront of the global agenda, the relevance of horticulture is clear – the way horticulture is carried out today has a direct bearing on the health of the global planet.

Floriade Venlo 2012 will represent a unique encounter between aesthetics and functionality, tradition and modernity. The Floriade will be, first and foremost, a celebration of nature and the beauty of horticulture—a place where visitors can see, smell, touch, taste, and feel the joys of it.

overview2But the Floriade will also be an informative experience, where the public can learn about the various values of horticulture today and understand better the many questions that arise from modern horticulture. From genetic engineering, diseases, biodiversity, safe waste management, depleting food supply, and others, the host of issues facing our planet related to horticulture are significant.

The questions that arise – and to which the Floriade will aim to respond – are numerous: How can horticulture and its products contribute to that “joie de vivre” that is so essential to human well-being? What is the role of sustainable horticulture in supplying energy and in serving as an important economic engine? Why are education and innovation so vital for the future of horticulture? What will be the future of the green city? And finally: how do international art, culture, and entertainment inspire horticulture and vice versa?

The 5 sub-themes of Floriade Venlo 2012:

  • “Relax & Heal”
  • “Green Engine”
  • “Education & Innovation”
  • “Environment”
  • “World Show Stage”

Floriade Venlo will ask these questions that touch any ordinary citizen – in a most extraordinary setting
