Shanghai Manual to guide future urban development
Shanghai Manual, as one of the most important legacies of Expo 2010, is a guide for future urban development in the world. It integrated sustainable urban development concept and Urban Best Practices Area cases from cities all over the world.
Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary General of the BIE, Sha Zukang, Under Secretary General of United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs, and Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng attended the launch ceremony of the manual.
"Urban leaders around the world will refer to the Shanghai Manual as an inspiration and a support in their endeavor to improve their cities, to make them more sustainable, to make them better," said Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales at the ceremony.
"This is the first time that a World Expo launches this type of initiative. By pursuing the training goals of the Shanghai Manual which will remain a living document that will be promoted and updated by our organizations," he added.
Sha Zukang congratulated the launch of the manual and said it is a substantive result of Shanghai Expo. With the cooperation of the UN, the BIE and Shanghai Municipal government, the book will contribute to the sustainable development of cities around world as well as their urban planning and management.
Han Zheng said that based on a large quantity of real practices, Shanghai Manual has provided feasible references and suggestions for urban management and research. It will help other cities to share the fruit of Shanghai Expo and to create new urban development patterns.
On October 31, 2010, the closing day of Shanghai Expo, the participants jointly issued the Shanghai Declaration as a "summary of the substantive achievements" of the event. The declaration advocated cities that are environmentally friendly, efficient and diversified.
Shanghai Manual inherited the structure of Shanghai Declaration, and expended the contents into 10 chapters, including urban management, scientific innovation, cultural heritage, green building, traffic management and so on.
After the ceremony, Shanghai Expo Forum 2011 edition was held. Officials from the United Nations and BIE as well as experts and scholars participating the writing of the manual gave their speeches.
