Shanghai Manual to guide future urban development

Edited by the United Nations, the Bureau International des Expositions, and the Executive Committee of Shanghai Expo 2010, the Shanghai Manual was published on November 7th 2011 in Shanghai.

Shanghai Manual, as one of the most important legacies of Expo 2010, is a guide for future urban development in the world. It integrated sustainable urban development concept and Urban Best Practices Area cases from cities all over the world.

Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary General of the BIE, Sha Zukang, Under Secretary General of United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs, and Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng attended the launch ceremony of the manual.

"Urban leaders around the world will refer to the Shanghai Manual as an inspiration and a support in their endeavor to improve their cities, to make them more sustainable, to make them better," said Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales at the ceremony.

"This is the first time that a World Expo launches this type of initiative. By pursuing the training goals of the Shanghai Manual which will remain a living document that will be promoted and updated by our organizations," he added.

Sha Zukang congratulated the launch of the manual and said it is a substantive result of Shanghai Expo. With the cooperation of the UN, the BIE and Shanghai Municipal government, the book will contribute to the sustainable development of cities around world as well as their urban planning and management.

Han Zheng said that based on a large quantity of real practices, Shanghai Manual has provided feasible references and suggestions for urban management and research. It will help other cities to share the fruit of Shanghai Expo and to create new urban development patterns.

On October 31, 2010, the closing day of Shanghai Expo, the participants jointly issued the Shanghai Declaration as a "summary of the substantive achievements" of the event. The declaration advocated cities that are environmentally friendly, efficient and diversified.

Shanghai Manual inherited the structure of Shanghai Declaration, and expended the contents into 10 chapters, including urban management, scientific innovation, cultural heritage, green building, traffic management and so on.

After the ceremony, Shanghai Expo Forum 2011 edition was held. Officials from the United Nations and BIE as well as experts and scholars participating the writing of the manual gave their speeches.

World Expo Museum on the agenda

24/10/2011 - As one of the after-use projects of World Expo Shanghai 2010, the World Expo Museum is planned to start its construction in 2012 and to open to public in 2015.

The Museum, financed by Shanghai Municipal Government, is the first and only World Expo museum in the 160-year Expo history.

According to a recent report of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) on the meeting of Information and Communication Committee, the museum proposed a 30,450-square-meter upper-ground constructive surface, and 9,900-square-meter underground area in the past Expo site of Shanghai.

The Museum will have about 2,000-square-meter space for research and document center to facilitate scholars, students and future Expo organizers to do researches and train staffs.

During the preparation and construction of the Museum, on September 24, 2011, Shanghai opened a commemoration exhibition to house part of the precious exhibits donated by participants. The exhibition will last at least two year.

The after-use of Shanghai Expo site focuses on its public functions, aiming to become a center for cultural activities, museums, high-end exhibition venues, tourism and recreation.

Shanghai to build world’s first Expo museum

05/07/2011 - Shanghai will build a World Expo museum, which is the first and the only Expo museum authorized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), in four years on the site of World Expo Shanghai 2010.

Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary General of BIE, met with the working team of the future Expo museum in Paris on July 5th, and talked about the concept of the museum which is one of the main projects of the after-use of Expo.

"The Expo museum will be the first real 'international' museum in China," said Lorelei Liu, curator of the future museum.

The museum will not only display precious collection of books and objects of the past Expos, but also feature a documentation and research center with cooperation and support of BIE.

The center will conserve hard copy and digitalized archives from Expo history to the bidding process and operation report to facilitate not only the research of Expo, but the training of working staff for future Expos as well.

The after-use of Shanghai Expo site focuses on its public functions, aiming to become a center for cultural activities, museums, high-end exhibition venues, tourism and recreation.

Shanghai will also open an Expo 2010 commemorative exhibition on September 1st, 2011 at the Urban Footprint Pavilion to showcase the memory of the 184 days and some famous exhibits donated by participants, such as Baby Miguelin from Spanish Pavilion.

Kite passion finds a new space in the site of Shanghai 2010

04/07/2011 - On a misty Saturday afternoon, the buzzing sound on the Pudong banks of the Huangpu River is not that of an electric scooter or some battery-operated machine. It is the sound of kites flying at a very high speed fuelled by the strong river breeze. Kite-flying is becoming a favourite activity in the site of Expo 2010.

The 5.28 square-kilometres Expo site is now an ideal space for local residents who are passionate about kite flying. On a sunny day, the sky becomes a playground dotted with different colours and different shapes against a completely new skyline. According to one of the adepts, some of these kites fly up to 800 meters high.

The World Expo site, which welcomed over 73 million visitors and 300 participants last year, provided the opportunity to regenerate a previously degraded and highly polluted area in the city. As the Expo makes space for the new future urban layout of the heart of Shanghai, people are already finding a quiet large space to perfect the art of flying colourful and original kites.

Opening of the Month of Shanghai Culture in Paris

18/04/2011 - The Shanghai government and the Chinese Embassy in France yesterday launched a series of activities highlighting Shanghai culture. The Secretary General of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales and the President of the BIE Jean-Pierre Lafon attended the opening ceremony of the "Month of Shanghai Culture in Paris" at the Chinese Cultural Centre in Paris.

Yu Zhengsheng, Secretary of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China, has attended the ceremony and inaugurated Shanghai's digital library in Paris.

Secretary Yu said during the ceremony that, given both countries' long and rich culture, he hoped to see an increase of cultural exchanges and cooperation between France and China, after Shanghai successfully hosted World Expo Shanghai 2010.
